Telepsychiatry vs. In-Person: Which Is Right for You in Sonoma County?

Wine country traffic shouldn't be the reason you skip your appointment. Between work, kids' schedules, and the drive time that comes with living in Sonoma, Glen Ellen, Kenwood, or Petaluma, "I'll just reschedule" can quietly turn into months of delayed care. Here's how to decide which format actually fits your life.

What Telepsychiatry Actually Is

Telepsychiatry is a secure, private video appointment with your psychiatrist — same clinical quality, different setting. You'll discuss symptoms, history, and treatment planning exactly as you would in person, and medication management (including prescriptions, where appropriate) can typically be handled the same way.

Telepsychiatry Might Be the Better Fit If You:

  • Have a demanding work schedule and need to fit an appointment into a lunch break

  • Live further from Sonoma and want to avoid the drive

  • Feel more comfortable and open talking from a familiar, private space

  • Are managing ongoing medication follow-ups rather than a first evaluation

  • Are a parent trying to coordinate a teen's appointment around school hours

What In-Person Care Offers

Some patients — and some situations — genuinely benefit from being in the room. In-person visits can make it easier to build rapport initially, and some patients simply feel more supported meeting face-to-face, especially for a first evaluation or during a more complex or emotionally difficult period.

In-Person Might Be the Better Fit If You:

  • Are coming in for a first evaluation and want the fullest possible read on the visit

  • Feel more comfortable speaking in person than on a screen

  • Are dealing with a more complex situation involving multiple family members (e.g., a family session around a teen's care)

  • Simply prefer it — that's a completely valid reason on its own

You're Not Locked Into One Choice

Many of our patients mix formats — an in-person first evaluation followed by telepsychiatry follow-ups, or the reverse. The point isn't to pick the "correct" option; it's to pick whatever keeps you consistently showing up for your care, because consistency is what actually drives results.

Both Options Are Available at Sonoma Moon & Star Mental Health

We offer in-person appointments at our Sonoma office (811-813 W. Napa St.) and secure telepsychiatry visits for patients throughout Sonoma County.

Whichever format fits your life right now, the most important step is simply starting.
